District 14 Virtual Town Hall 4.28.2021 - Wide Angle Youth Media

We were honored to hear about Wide Angle Youth Media and the impact it has on students city wide during our April 28th Virtual Town Hall. Students Leah Mann, Janae Young, Indigo Turner, and Ellie McGinley as well as Wide Angle Youth Media staff Destiny Brown and Darian Jones join me for this important conversation about their work, and lifting youth voice. The full video is here.

We learned about Wide Angle Youth Media, who in their 20 years in Baltimore, have worked with over 6,000 young people, many of whom have graduated and entered into the field of media production, photography and related occupations. Students are learning leadership skills and ways to express themselves creatively.

They featured this amazing video, which is included in several national film festivals for national recognition, they made during the pandemic, together. It is their interpretation of Amanda Gorman’s inaugural poem. Please take a look at it here. This is an example of their superb work.

We also got a chance to talk about how the students are feeling. Virtual has been tough for them, and they are looking forward to getting back to normal, but they have really be resilient and adapting to the situation in order to succeed.

Wide Angle Youth Media is looking for students to participate in their middle school and high school programs. Here is the website to learn more.
