Roe v Wade is Overturned
Words cannot express the outrage I felt when Roe V Wade was overturned last week by the Supreme Court. We are very lucky to live in Maryland where many women - including me - worked hard to get Question 6 passed in 1992 which keeps abortion safe and legal here in Maryland. I remember the organizing we did of college campuses in the area while I was a student at Goucher College to get this ballot initiative passed.
Maryland is one of only 13 states with this status as a pro-choice state. Many women from across the country will be coming to Baltimore for reproductive health care, and we welcome them. Our system of reproductive health care providers need our help to ensure that access to care is available for anyone who needs it. Mayor Scott and the Baltimore City Council have teamed up to provide $300,000 for local reproductive health care organizations. Please also consider donating to the Baltimore Abortion Fund here. You can also volunteer for the Baltimore Abortion Fund.
The next item of business is to work toward assisting women across the country to advocate for changes in their state laws, working toward codifying Roe v. Wade in Congress (which should have been done), and the long slow process of changing the Supreme Court to reverse the trends we are seeing now. I know it seems so hopeless right now. It is ok to feel that way. Please know that there are paths to change. Organizations like Planned Parenthood, NARAL, and Baltimore Women United will help build our path forward.
Voting is critical, but voting for the right people is necessary. Encourage your friends and family to vote in this upcoming election.
